Which types of Health Insurance Plans are the best?

Whether you're looking for individual health insurance for the first time or you've done this before, there are two schools of thought on how to determine which health insurance plan is the right one for you. The first is based on how comprehensive the benefits are and the other is based on price. The most satisfied consumers who work with Health Choice One are those who find a balance between the two... affordable health coverage for a reasonable monthly price. The four most popular types of health insurance available are Obamacare, Short Term Health Insurance, Fixed Indemnity Health Insurance and Faith Based Health Plans.  We'll cover those in more detail below.

What is ObamaCare?

Obamacare health insurance plans first became available in 2014 via the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act on March 23, 2010. Obamacare health plans are guarantee issue, which means health insurance companies are prohibited from denying healthcare coverage to anyone based on pre-existing  health conditions. In addition, the premiums for these healthcare plans are the same for everyone based on their given age, regardless of pre-existing conditions. Health insurance subsidies are available to those who qualify and can reduce or even eliminate the monthly cost depending on your income.  If you qualify for a health insurance subsidy, your health quotes will reflect a reduced monthly cost.

What if I missed the Obamacare Open Enrollment period?

Enrollment in an Obamacare plan is limited to a 6 week annual open enrollment period (OEP), which was November 1st - December 15th 2017 for a 2018 effective date and has yet to be determined for 2018 enrollments for a 2019 effective date.  If you missed Open Enrollment this year, there are two ways you can still get a 2018 Obamacare health insurance plan. 1) By qualifying for a "Special Enrollment Period" (SEP) due to a "Qualifying Life Event" (QLE), such as losing other heath insurance coverage, changes in household, changes in residence and a few others. 2) If you qualify for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).  If you don't qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, don't worry, there are several great health insurance options available to you all year long. (See Below)

Are there alternatives to Obamacare?

YES! The top three reasons our customers give for not enrolling in an Obamacare plan are:

  1. They missed the annual Open Enrollment Period.

  2. They don't have a Qualifying Life Event (QLE) in between open enrollment periods and don't qualify for Obamacare.

  3. They qualify for Obamacare, but don't qualify for a subsidy and the Obamacare plans are too expensive.

Whatever the reason, Health Choice One can help!  There are several affordable healthcare options to Obamacare plans. The most commonly chosen by our customers are:

  • Short-Term Health Insurance

  • Fixed Indemnity Health Insurance

  • Faith Based Health Plans

What is Short Term Health Insurance?

Short-Term Health Insurance (also known as Short Term Medical Insurance) is a health insurance plan with a limited duration, usually less than 12 months.  These plans are typically purchased by those who need temporary medical insurance coverage to fill the gap in between long term health insurance plans, such as employer sponsored coverage (Group Insurance) or ACA-Marketplace plans (Obamacare).

The ideal candidate for a Short-Term Medical Insurance plan would include those who are changing jobs, students coming off of their parents health insurance plan and those who missed the annual open enrollment period for Obamacare or can't purchase an Obamacare policy in between open enrollment periods because they don't have a qualifying life event (QLE).

Short-Term Medical Insurance plans are typically less expensive than traditional health insurance plans. The benefits and coverage designs vary depending on the carrier, but the more popular plans include benefits for doctor's office visits, preventive and wellness care, diagnostic testing, emergency room, urgent care, surgery and hospitalization.

What is Fixed Indemnity Health Insurance?

Fixed Indemnity Health Insurance (also known as Fixed Benefit Insurance), pays a set dollar amount per each covered medical expense. These plans differ from the traditional health insurance plans you might be used to by paying First-dollar benefits with no deductibles or copays to satisfy. Unlike Short-Term Health Insurance, Fixed Benefit Plans are not limited in duration and may be kept in force as long as you continue to pay your monthly premiums.

Fixed Benefit Plans can also be significantly less expensive than traditional health insurance plans. The benefits and coverage designs vary depending on the carrier you choose, but some of the most common plans include first-dollar benefits for doctor's office visits, emergency room, urgent care, hospital stays, surgeries, lab work and more.

What are Faith Based Health Plans?

Faith Based Health Plans are more commonly known as Healthcare Sharing Plans and are offered by Healthcare Sharing Ministries, not insurance companies. Healthcare Sharing Ministries are organizations that facilitate the sharing of medical expenses among groups of like-minded individuals and families who have common ethical or religious beliefs. Faith Based health plans are exempt from the ObamaCare tax penalties assessed to those who do not have health insurance. Faith Based health plans have become so popular, that In 2015, The New York Times stated that membership has grown recently because of the healthcare sharing ministries' exemption to the insurance mandate of the Affordable Care Act, and that monthly cost of membership in a healthcare sharing ministry is generally lower than the cost of traditional health insurance.  Although not insurance, Healthcare Sharing Plans are acceptable under the law and have been in existence since 1993. These plans welcome members of all faiths who can honor a Statement of Beliefs, by which the program operates.

The benefits and coverage designs vary depending on the plan you choose, but some of the most common benefits include doctor's office visits, preventive and wellness care, specialist visits, emergency room, urgent care, hospital stays, surgeries, lab work, diagnostic testing, maternity and more.

I would like you to know that after speaking with Asia, it was because of her professionalism, kindness and sincerity in obtaining the best health coverage possible for me, that I decided to go with her. Asia is truely an asset to your company, but I would assume that you are aware of that already. Thank you again.

I just wanted you to know that I talked to Dan today and he is a credit to your company. He took the time to research things that were important to me, checked to see if my doctor was in network, etc. He speaks very highly of the company itself. He did a conference call with me to show me comparisons on medical insurance quotes and carrier ratings. He was very helpful and I appreciated his attitude and customer service. His degree of helpfulness is uncommon these days. I was impressed.

Tyler P., 2013

Today Tiara helped me choose the right health insurance plan and she was excellent! She respected I knew my way around insurance lingo and we were able to discuss specific facts/options with ease. She took her time, chatting with me while verifications were in process and made the entire process easy and even enjoyable. She is an outstanding employee representing your company and I sincerely hope her work ethic is acknowledged and appreciated. I know I thanked her!

I had the pleasure of working with Joey this morning on selecting a new health insurance plan. Joey not only provided honest and accurate information, but addressed all of my questions and concerns with simple explanations and a great sense of compassion. I strongly believe in commending any person when he/she goes above and beyond in whatever they do.  I feel that Joey did just that.  He actually made an unpleasant task painless. Thank you, Joey.  Keep up the wonderful work!  You were a breath of fresh air.
